VICTORY LOOKOUT AND OBSERVATORY

Bird lovers the world over already know of the phenomenal avian life in Costa Rica, but our observatory is not only for the keen ornithologists, but also serves as an introduction to the splendid show of colour and voice of our avifauna.

Victory Lookout and Observatory at Highland Heritage

There are some 400 species of birds at Highland Heritage C.R., from the tiniest hummingbirds of just a few grams to the huge crested Guan some 3-feet (90-cm) long, brilliant red Tanagers, electric-blue Dacnis, Emerald Toucanets, flocks of bright yellow and green Sulphur-winged Parakeets, Fiery-billed Aracnis, and, of course, the Resplendent Quetzal - thought by many to be the most beautiful bird in the world.

Not only are the colours splendid and often spectacular, but the songs at daybreak are an inspiration and delight to us all.

Victory Lookout has extensive viewsOur large covered observatory has views over three levels. It overlooks, and is on the edge of, a canyon higher than the highest trees in the virgin rainforest below - good not only for seeing birds, but also monkeys in the tops of the trees below. On the other side of the observatory, the rainforest towers high into the (often) emerald-blue sky, with views of the surrounding mountains which rise to 10,000 feet (3,000 metres). The lower level is a relaxation area with the tranquil sound of the adjacent fountains, and dramatic views over the gardens to Chapel-in-the-Clouds.

Other than the observatory there are many natural and improved trails that can be followed in the forest where birds can be viewed and heard.
